Why Kid Cudi Will Win The Battle Against Depression

We at Musik !D TV are continuing our effort to help raise awareness of mental illness in the music industry for Mental Health Awareness Month.

After covering Kid Cudi’s shocking announcement last year, we thought it would be an excellent time to follow up on his progress and share why we believe he will win the battle against depression.

1. He admitted his medical condition and shared the news with his fans.

In October 2016, the Cleveland, Ohio rapper shocked the music world by announcing his constant struggle with anxiety and depression in a Facebook post:

According to Lisa Firestone Ph.D., clinical psychologist, author, and the Director of Research and Education for the Glendon Association, says that one way to combat depression is never to isolate yourself. She wrote in an article, Eight Ways to actively fight depression, that when depressed, “you may hear thoughts telling you to be alone, keep quiet and not to bother people with your problems. Do not listen to them. When you feel bad, even if you feel embarrassed, confiding in a friend or voicing your struggles can lighten your burden and begin a process of ending your unhappiness. Talking about your problems or worries is not a self-centered or self-pitying endeavor. Friends and family, especially those who care about you, will appreciate knowing what's going on.” Source

2. He has supportive, understanding friends.

Friends, how many of us have them? Kid Cudi has a great group of friends to support him during his recovery. Kanye West, Travis Scott, Pete Wentz, Pharrell Williams, and many others lent their support when he needed it most. Firestone wrote social atmospheres can do wonders for those who are depressed.

“Even the simple act of putting yourself in a social atmosphere can lift your spirits. Go to a place where there are people who may have similar interests as you, or even to a public spot like a museum, park, or mall, where you could enjoy being amongst people. Never allow yourself to indulge in the thought that you are different from or less than anyone else. Everyone struggles at times, and your depression does not define who you are or single you out from others.”Source

3. Getting professional help.

Kid Cudi is currently seeking help for depression and suicidal urges. He said in his Facebook post, “I am not at peace. I deserve to have peace. I deserve to be happy and smiling. Why not me? I guess I give so much of myself to others I forgot that I need to show myself some love too...”

HealthyPlace.com states that once one seeks help for depression, they’re no longer allowed to deal with it alone because they have a team, and it’s the team’s job as well as that person to help overcome depression. Source

4. He keeps making music and performing.

Though he is currently seeking help that did not stop him, and most importantly his label (Republic) from releasing his album, Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin'. He made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon earlier this year and is performing at the BET Experience this summer.
