Fresh Music Friday: Elijah Blake - Forget You: Voice In My Head

(By Lakin Starling | December 08, 2016 for Fader.com)

Singer/songwriter Elijah Blake travels to Japan in his new, captivating video for "Forget You: Voice In My Head." Directed by Sean Alexander, the visual, debuting above, is split into three sections, and each takes place in its own aesthetically striking setting. Throughout the clip, Blake's eye contact with the camera helps communicate the soft intensity of his emotions. In one of the most enthralling scenes, Blake is surrounded by lush flowers and green hills while movement masters create beautiful poses.

"With the influx of streaming and video content amongst us millennials it's so easy to get lost in the redundancy of a lot of the recent visuals from our favorite artists and creative peers," Blake told The FADER over email. "You start to believe all the great ideas have already been done before, or that the current state of hip-hop and soul doesn't allow new artists freedom or financial support to execute ideas as iconic as the ’90s Missy, Busta, TLC, and MJ era.

"One day my director Sean Alexander and I were sitting back thinking how crazy would it be to just hop on a plane with no crew, no plan, no restrictions, and be forced to pull from whatever culture we stumble upon. Three days later, we were headed to Japan with just his camera. Neither one of us spoke a lick of Japanese, but we came up with this piece with the help of some friends we made along the way. I'm very proud of it."
