Fresh Music Friday: Tuko - "Payroll"
This Fresh Music Friday is quite special; you can call it a classic of sorts. This week's feature is "Payroll" by Tuko Proby. Yes, our very own Tuko Proby, the dope guy that shares hot topics on our YouTube channel daily. Though "Payroll" was created 5 years ago, the track is still fire. I chatted with the big boss about what he thinks of this track today and his thoughts on the music business.
Musik ID TV: This single is still knocking even though it was created what five years ago!
Tuko Proby: Haha, yes it was recorded about five years ago in my bedroom.
MIDTV: Of course, we want to know your thought process behind the track. How was it created from start to finish?
TP: I was just about done with my Infrared & Ultraviolet EP and was working with my good friend Donye’a G. at the time, so I reached out to him for some music for the project. He was totally down. I took the track home and proceeded to lay down the ideas for the chorus and verses. Once the song was complete, I thought it would be cool to do it as a duet kind of like the Aaliyah & Tretch “Girl Like You” record. I reached out to another good friend Danni Rouge to tackle the singing parts, and she was game. May have been a little provocative to have her recite “girl” in the lyrics, but she was game to push the envelope a little with me. Long behold “Payroll.”
MIDTV: Listening to the record now, how does it compare to when you first completed it years ago? Would you change anything?
TP: I personally wouldn’t change anything because I believe art is art and I wanted to be proud of that release so I can say I’m pleased and wouldn’t do anything differently to the record.
MIDTV: What have you learned about music as a solo artist?
TP: I’ve learned that so much of music is about identity. Knowing who you are and projecting that into the world is at the nucleus of it all.
MIDTV: What's the most important lesson you have learned about the music industry?
TP: I’ve learned never to wait on people. No matter if you sign with some agency or partner up with some other type of company to provide some artist services for you. Your career is your career, and it will never mean as much to others as it does to you. Do not wait on others for your dreams.
MIDTV: What are your artistic goals for 2018?
TP: I took the last couple of years to focus on personal growth and allowed myself to invest time in other interests. I’ve learned so much about this world we live in on a multitude of levels. My artistic goals for 2018 are to continue to create without fear and continue to be as honest as I can be in my music. I’m working on a new project now that allows me to fuse all the lessons I’ve learned over the past couple of years, and I can’t wait to share that with people.
